Korkyra (also Corcyra; ) was an ancient Greek city on the island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea that is adjacent to Epirus.An Inventory of Archaic and Classical Poleis: An Investigation Conducted by The Copenhagen Polis Centre for the Danish National Research Foundation by Mogens Herman Hansen, 2005, page 361 It was a colony of Corinth that was founded in the Archaic period. Korkyra was acting as a port of call on the sailing routes, especially to reach the Italian coast or ventured farther north. According to Thucydides, the earliest recorded naval battle took place between Korkyra and Corinth, roughly 260 years before he was writing,Thucydides, History of the Peloponnesian War 1.13. and thus in the mid-7th century BC.
