The first cornerstone of the Hermitage of the Catalans was laid on the grounds of the Loma del Tadino in 1886. A series of accidents delayed construction until 1921. Now the site of the Jose Martà Memorial in the Plaza de la Revolucion. The Cuban State confiscated the land on which the sanctuary was built in 1951 to construct what was then known as Civic Square and the Monument to Jose Marti, the Patron of Cuban Independence.
